Pipa the Easter Magician
Pipa the Easter Magician
Pipa was the smallest Easter Bunny in River Glen. He had soft white fur, a twitchy pink nose, and a very big dream. Pipa did not want to be just an Easter Bunny. He wanted to be a magician.
A real one. With a tall black hat, a swishy cape, and a wand that could make everyone gasp, “OOOHHHH!”
But in River Glen, every bunny had an Easter job.
Some painted eggs. Some packed baskets. Some tied ribbons.
And Pipa?
Pipa thought Easter jobs were much too plain.
He wanted sparkle. He wanted surprise. He wanted magic.
So he slipped behind the tulip patch to practice. He lifted a dandelion stem like a wand. “Abraca-dandelion!” he cried. A puff of seeds flew into a nearby chicken’s beak. “Aaachoo!” sneezed the chicken. Nothing else happened.
Pipa frowned. He tried again. “Hocus pocus, eggy focus!” He pointed at a painted egg. The egg gave a little wobble. Then—CLACK! It cracked right open. Egg yolk splashed everywhere. The chicken looked offended.
Pipa drooped. He thought, magic worked better with someone there to see it. “Maybe,” he sighed, “I just need an audience.”
It was Easter Eve. The moon rose silver over River Glen. The eggs were painted, the baskets packed, and the meadow smelled like spring.
All the bunnies gathered, ready to hide the eggs before morning. That was when Pipa hopped to the front.
“Wait!” he cried. Every bunny looked up. Pipa lifted his chin. “Tonight,” he announced, “I, Pipa the Magnificent, will perform a magic show!” The bunnies stared. “A magic show?” whispered one.
Pipa reached into his sleeve and pulled out a long ribbon. “At the flick of my wand,” he said, “this ribbon will become a trail of spring flowers!” He gave it a grand swish. The ribbon did not float. It snagged on a basket. Pipa tugged. The basket tipped. Pipa tugged harder. The basket flipped. And then—
BOUNCE! ROLL! POP! POP! POP!
Eggs flew everywhere.
Pink eggs bounced into tulips. Green eggs tumbled into moss. Blue eggs plopped into puddles. A golden egg landed on the lamb’s head like a tiny shiny crown.
One egg dropped into a flowerpot. One rolled beside the stepping stones. And somehow—somehow—one landed in a bird’s empty nest.
Pipa froze. He looked at the meadow. He looked at the eggs. He looked at his dandelion wand. His ears sank low.
This was not the grand, sparkling magic show he had imagined. Then he heard a tiny sound behind him. A gasp. Then cheers.
The little bunnies clapped and bounced. “They’re everywhere!” “The best hiding spots ever!” The eggs really were everywhere. High and low. Near and far. Tucked into the loveliest, trickiest places.
Pipa turned to Mama Bunny. “So,” he said softly, “my magic show… worked?” Mama Bunny kissed the top of his head. “In a very surprising way,” she said.
Pipa looked out over River Glen. Maybe magic did not always happen the way you planned. Sometimes, it happened the way it was needed. And from then on, Pipa had two jobs: Easter Bunny. And magician. Both bringing wonder in their own way.
